Thermal Performance: Modeling & Bridging

Like most things in life, an efficient thermal envelope is only as good as its weakest link. Thermal bridges short-circuit insulation and quickly diminish the effectiveness of a thermal envelope. This course will illustrate common thermal bridging details, the issues associated with them, and detailing options to correct the problem.

Air Barriers are becoming more prevalent in our industry as owners start to see their benefits and jurisdictions start to require them.  Air Barrier design is a detailed endeavor that requires the designer to have a high technical understanding of material properties and compatibility. 

Window design And Selection

Selecting windows can be a tricky endeavor for any seasoned architect. There are many factors to consider when specifying windows, including cost, performance requirements of the, and minimum performance requirements in the IBC. This presentation outlines the basic code requirements and explain how to properly select, specify, and review submittals for windows to ensure that they meet the requirements set out for the project.



Increasingly, specifications for commissioning include requirements for building envelope-specific commissioning. There is confusion on the part of owners, architects and commissioning providers as to who can perform this work and what it entails. This course is designed to demystify the role of the Building Envelope Commissioning Provider (BECxP) and explain how to best integrate envelope commissioning into the overall project to best address the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR). Only eligible for 1 AIA LU.

Vapor Barriers and Water Content in Walls

Water attacks our buildings in many forms, and while most designers understand how to detail for bulk or liquid water, water vapor management still proves to be a topic that confuses even the most experienced Architects. The problem is often compounded by use of newer construction materials with physical properties that are not properly understood. This presentation will discuss the science behind vapor transmission and how to avoid condensation in your wall assemblies.


Selecting, Specifying, and Detailing Below Grade Waterproofing

Below-Grade waterproofing is a critical component to the longevity of any building, and yet it is often the most overlooked waterproofing system during design. Understanding the requirements of the site and the properties of the different waterproofing systems available are key to specifying and detailing an effective system that will protect the building long-term. Shortcuts or errors in these systems can have costly implications down the line, and many property owners are forced to deal with a leaky building or pay several times over what it would have cost to do it right the first time. This course will review the most common site conditions seen in our region and the pros and cons of the different waterproofing systems available, with the goal of providing you with the tools necessary to confidently specify and detail below-grade waterproofing systems on your projects.

Cladding Substructure System

Rainscreen cladding substructure systems are often overlooked or under designed in construction documents, leaving it to the contractor to figure it out during construction. This can lead to large change orders or sometimes require complete redesign of the cladding system if a proper substructure proves to be cost prohibitive. This course will discuss these systems and common design issues architects need to be aware of when designing the façade of their building. Modern cladding materials come with modern design problems that are much easier to address when dealt with early in the design process vs during construction.
